Houston Recording Studio Session Prep: 6 Moves Before You Hit Record

Walking into a Houston recording studio for the first time can feel intimidating. A wasted session is also an expensive lesson. After hundreds of sessions inside Da Spaceship and Black Orbit, here is what we tell every artist before they hit record.

Know your songs cold. Studio time is not rehearsal time. Practice your verses until you can deliver them clean and in tempo on three hours of sleep. The tighter your performance, the fewer takes you burn, and the more your engineer can focus on making the record sound great.

Hydrate the day before. Vocal cords do not bounce back overnight from coffee, late nights, and Houston humidity. Water and rest 24 hours out beat any miracle throat spray on the shelf at HEB.

Bring two reference tracks. Pull up songs that match the version of you that you are chasing. Tone, energy, mix. Give your engineer a target instead of a guessing game.

Show up with a plan and leave room for magic. Have your songs in the order you want to track. Have your priorities clear. The best moments in a session are usually the ones nobody planned, so be ready to chase them.

Eat a real meal first. Sessions stall when artists run on a granola bar and a pre workout. Solid food in, solid performance out.
